Turbo film, beat by beat

Sixty seconds planned as ten beats before a frame was rendered. Each picture below is the actual frame from the middle of that beat. Times, lenses and distances are the ones in the animation script.

Frame 61: Cold open00.0–05.0 s

Beat 1

Cold open

Camera
Macro on the compressor inlet, 60 mm, 0.48 m away. Slow pull back while the camera swings from 74 to 50 degrees.
Action
Wheel idling at a third of a turn a second.
Sound
Low drone, first air hiss.

0.9 s “Every engine breathes. A turbo makes it breathe harder.”

Frame 193: Spin up05.0–11.0 s

Beat 2

Spin up

Camera
Hero three-quarter, 55 to 52 mm, about 1 m out. Orbits across the front to the turbine side.
Action
Turbine housing heats from cold to glowing (3 to 10 s); shaft spins up to 3 turns a second.
Sound
Whine rises with the shaft speed.

5.6 s “Exhaust that would have gone out the tailpipe spins this wheel instead.”

Frame 391: Come apart11.0–21.5 s

Beat 3

Come apart

Camera
Wider, 45 to 42 mm, 1.25 to 1.3 m out, still drifting round.
Action
Explode along the shaft: nuts and fittings first (12 s), housings next (14 s), then the rotating group and bearings (18 to 21 s). 43 parts.
Sound
Metallic ticks on each part release, timed to the stagger.

12.2 s “Here is what is inside. Forty-three parts.”

16.3 s “A hot side, a cold side, and one shaft between them.”

21.0 s “The shaft never touches metal. It floats on a film of oil.”

Frame 571: The line-up21.5–26.0 s

Beat 4

The line-up

Camera
Hold on the exploded line-up, 42 mm, slow drift.
Action
Every part floating in assembly order, rotor turning slowly.
Sound
Score breathes out.

No voice. Let it breathe.

Frame 673: Compressor wheel26.0–30.0 s

Beat 5

Compressor wheel

Camera
Macro, 65 mm, 0.33 to 0.36 m from the wheel, orbiting from -26 to 8 degrees.
Action
Seven full blades and seven splitters turning at 0.12 turns a second.
Sound
Air rush under the line.

26.0 s “This is the compressor wheel. Each blade pulls air in, and throws it outward.”

Frame 793: Back together30.0–36.0 s

Beat 6

Back together

Camera
Pull back to 52 mm, about 1 m, swing to 26 then 2 degrees.
Action
Parts return in reverse order and seat.
Sound
Clicks as parts seat; score resolves.

31.9 s “And it all goes back together.”

Frame 919: Cut in half36.0–40.5 s

Beat 7

Cut in half

Camera
Push in to 0.5 m, 55 mm, low angle.
Action
Front half of every housing lifts off (36.2 to 37.8 s), hatched section faces show; hot side heats again.
Sound
Low hit on the lift, exhaust roar fades in.

36.6 s “Cut it in half, and you can watch it work.”

39.6 s “Hot exhaust drives the turbine.”

Frame 1051: Watch it work40.5–47.0 s

Beat 8

Watch it work

Camera
Track along the section from compressor to turbine, 55 mm, 0.46 to 0.5 m.
Action
Exhaust streaks drive the turbine, intake air spirals out of the compressor, oil runs feed to bearings to drain.
Sound
Exhaust, intake and a thin oil trickle, each panned to its side.

42.3 s “The same shaft spins the compressor, packing air into the engine.”

46.9 s “Oil feeds the bearings.”

Frame 1213: Wastegate47.0–54.0 s

Beat 9

Wastegate

Camera
Swing round to the turbine outlet, -104 degrees, 0.48 m.
Action
Flapper opens (48.6 to 49.6 s), exhaust slips past the wheel, flapper closes (53.2 to 54.2 s).
Sound
Pressure release as it opens.

49.3 s “Too much boost? The wastegate opens, and lets exhaust slip past the wheel.”

Frame 1369: Close54.0–60.0 s

Beat 10

Close

Camera
Pull back to the hero, 55 mm, 1 m.
Action
Halves come back (54.6 to 56.2 s); end card from 57.2 s with the Concept label and the voice credit.
Sound
Score lands, whine spins down.

55.4 s “A concept model, built and animated from scratch.”

Lens and distance are the virtual camera's settings in Blender. The voice is a computer voice (open-source Kokoro). Score and effects are synthesized in code. No AI images or video.
